This BBQ tofu sandwich is:

EASY to make: I’m now working full-time so easy, delicious and nutritious recipes are a top priority. You can meal prep this recipe by making the marinade and BBQ it on a weekday. This tofu can stay in the fridge marinating for up to four days.

Packed with flavor: we all know that tofu can taste pretty bland. It’s like a sponge ready to soak up whatever flavors you add to it. So, I thought green seasoning would be the perfect flavor profile. It contributes a rich, smoky flavor and works well with BBQ sauce.

High protein: Tofu is a complete plant protein which means that provides all the essential amino acids we need for healthy growth and development. On top of that, using whole wheat bread further increases the protein content.

Comforting: Crunchy toasted bread. Crispy air-fried tofu. thick and sticky BBQ sauce. Need I say more? It’s definitely on my comfort food menu from now on.

Notes on Ingredients needed to make a Tasty BBQ Tofu Sandwich

Please note that the amounts of the ingredients and the cooking instructions (in detail) are in the RECIPE CARD. Keep scrolling and you will find it down below.

Extra firm tofu- extra firm tofu produces the best texture. I recommend freezing your tofu before you use it for a meatier texture.

Green seasoning- I used celery, pimento berries, yellow onion, garlic, scallion, fresh thyme, salt and a little oil.

BBQ sauce, ketchup, and liquid aminos/soy sauce to glaze the tofu.

How To Make This Quick and Easy BBQ Tofu Sandwich

Slice frozen and thawed tofu into the desired shape.

Make green seasoning and allow tofu to marinate overnight or for at least an hour.

Preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees F.

Air fry tofu for 20 minutes, flipping halfway through.

Add barbecue sauce and turn the tofu to coat with the sauce. Air fry for 5 minutes more.

Assemble the sandwich with your desired toppings and sandwich bread.

How to make Green Seasoning:

Gather all ingredients (celery, parsley, scallion, onion, garlic, pimento berries, scotch bonnet pepper) and add them to a blender or food processor.

Add the onion to the base of the blender along with 1 tablespoon of oil and 2 tablespoons of water. Blend until there is a somewhat uniform color and texture.

You can store your green seasoning in a glass jar for up to a week in the refrigerator and up to a month in the freezer. If you are storing them in the freezer, I recommend freezing them in an ice cube tray and then once solid, transfer them to a freezer-safe container.

Other ways you can use BBQ tofu:

BBQ Tofu Wrap- you can wrap this tofu up in your favorite tortilla along with some fresh veggies.

BBQ Tofu Pizza- try topping your next homemade pizza with this BBQ Tofu.
