This Sautéed Chickpeas recipe is a nutritious and flavorful way to make your life so much easier. It takes just a few minutes to prepare and can be used as a side, on top of salads, in a wrap or even a snack.
I always thought that currying chickpeas was the only ‘right’ way to have chickpeas. I’m positive that a lot of Jamaicans can agree that he most widely used method of preparing chickpeas here is curried chickpeas. Trust me when I say that chickpeas have so much more potential (no hate against curried chickpeas)
One of my go-to ways to enjoy chickpeas is to simply sauté/ pan fry them. They turn out creamy on the inside and crispy on the outside. Then, imagine that elevated with your choice of fresh herbs/spices. They’re kinda like seasoned fries now that I think about it, just with way more fiber and protein.
This Sautéed Chickpea Recipe is:
Wholesome: Chickpeas are packed with protein, fiber, and a host of other nutrients. Garlic, onion and spices further increases the nutritional value along with a healthy fat of choice such as olive oil, coconut oil or avocado oil.
Quick and easy: it honestly does not get easier than this. This recipe takes minimal ingredients and very little clean up when you’re through.
Great for meal prep: This recipe is a great protein option to have on hand. Simply because of how versatile it is. You can mix it into your favorite pasta or add toss them in BBQ sauce to make a filling for a tortilla wrap; the options are endless.
Plant-based: this recipe is naturally vegan and gluten-free
Great for children: As I said earlier, this recipe reminds me of fries, and who doesn’t like fries? This recipe would make a healthy and tasty alternative to French fries.

Chickpeas- Of course, this pea is equal parts delicious and nutritious. You can use canned chickpeas, but nothing beats the flavor and texture of cooking your chickpeas from scratch, whether in an instant pot or in a pressure cooker.
Red onion- I used a red onion because it is slightly sweet, but you can use any kind of onion you have on hand.
Scallion- use the stem of the scallion while cooking and add the leaves/green parts a few minutes before removing the pan from heat.
Thyme- a staple herb that adds a beautiful and unique flavor, you can use fresh or dried thyme.
Garlic- freshly minced garlic goes a long way in adding flavor to any dish.
Spices of choice- I added dried parsley, but you can add a pinch of turmeric, paprika, cayenne or cumin for different flavor profiles.
