This blueberry protein shake is nothing short of creamy, thick, and delicious. It’s a nutritious and super easy way to start off the day and is perfect pre- or post-workout drink.
I’m obsessed with shakes/smoothies to say the least. They’re nutrient rich and makes me feel like I’m having dessert for breakfast.
This Vegan Protein Shake is:
Aesthetically pleasing: This protein shake is absolutely ‘picture perfect’. The vibrant blue-ish purple color is one of the many reasons why I love making this.
Easy-to-make: This drink comes together in no time. All you must do is throw all the ingredients in a blender and ta-dah! You have yourself a nourishing and refreshing drink.
Hunger squashing: The combination of protein, fiber and healthy fats in this blueberry shake will have you feeling fuller for longer.
What are the health benefits of this Blueberry Protein Shake?
Blueberries are rich in antioxidants so it may prevent certain diseases like cancer. If you regularly consume blueberries, it may also prevent vision loss and kidney stone formation.
I used both sunflower and chia seeds due to their exceptional health benefits. Sunflower seeds are rich in vitamin E and B. So, if you consume sunflower seeds regularly, the health of your skin may significantly improve. Furthermore, it’s vitamin B content may reduce stress, nervousness, or insomnia.
Chia seeds are a good source of plant-based protein, high in fiber and aids in proper digestion.
The healthy fats from the almond butter combined with the protein and fiber may aid in weight loss as you will feel fuller for a longer time.
Ingredients needed
Blueberries- You can use fresh or frozen. They’re delicious, add a beautiful color and lots of nutrients.
Pitted dates- adds extra sweetness to the shake as well as fiber.
Chia and sunflower seeds- improves the nutritional profile of the protein shake.
Plant-based protein powder- a convenient way to add protein to your diet.
Plant-based milk- any milk of choice will do.
Almond butter- adds healthy fats, protein and makes the blueberry protein shake extra creamy and flavorful.
Substitutions and Variations
Plant-based milk– You can use any plant-based milk of choice. If you like your protein shakes extra creamy you can go for milks like oat milk or soy milk. You can also use almond milk, rice milk or pea milk.
Protein powder- Feel free to use your favorite plant-based protein powder. Mine are Plant fusion and Vega. You can also switch up the flavor profile and use a chocolate flavored protein powder.
Nuts- You can add peanuts, walnuts, or pecans to make this shake extra creamy and nutritious.
Seeds- Flax seeds, sesame seeds or pumpkin seeds could be used instead. Just stick to the number of seeds I recommend in the recipe card found below to get the right consistency.
Nut/seed butters- You can swap the almond butter for peanut butter, cashew butter, tahini, or sunflower seed butter.
Dried fruits- Instead of pitted dates, you could use dried apricots, figs, or raisins.
Other fruits- Blueberries are great but could substitute them for strawberries, raspberries, mangoes, or peaches
